Engineering Training Centre of DUT

Engineering Training Centre (ETC) of DUT founded in 1999 was selected as National Experimental Demonstration Centre in 2006 and has become one of the first batch integrative engineering training departments which consist of 11 National Experimental Demonstration Centres. Also, it has become the group leader of Association of National Experimental Demonstration Centre integrative engineering training department. Engineering Training centre of DUT has set up the engineering training course for 29 majors in 17 faculties of the whole school which account for 72% of the undergraduates. It’s the largest experimental teaching centre in the school which occupied 12000 square meters. There are more than 1000 sets of teaching equipment which worth more than 30 million RMB. It has opened more than 110 operational training programs, which can allow 3500 to 3700 undergraduates and undertake 420 to 450 thousand man-hours of teaching load once a year.

The engineering training course is the core teaching task of the ETC. Guided by the localization that “to build research universities and cultivate elite students”, the ETC reformed the experimental teaching mode which has been followed for years and has established the new teaching system that “completely modular covering, transversely extend and longitudinally connected, comprehensive crossover in multi-levels and characterized with spiral features”. The new teaching system have 5 levels and 6 modules (mechanical cutting, advanced manufacturing technology, welding and plastic working, material molding technology, electronic technology foundation, environmental protection technology and science and technology innovation practice module), and have 463 hours and 112 practical training projects in total which run through the whole cultivation process of undergraduates. All along, the ETC insists on the principle that “education reform go ahead” and directs the construction of ETC and curriculum with the new engineering education concept, resulting in a series of teaching achievements. The course was selected as school quality course, national quality course and national resource sharing course in 2007, 2008 and 2014 respectively.

According to principle that “to connect with current industrial mainstream technology”, the ETC has established the top-class practical teaching condition for engineering training in China after years of efforts, which has super-learning atmosphere and modern factory environment. It also have varieties of regular mechanical process equipment and advanced manufacture technology means with abundant facilities such as the kinds of machining centre and numerical control machines, special machining equipment, rapid prototyping equipment, lost foam casting system, numerical control stamping equipment, advanced welding equipment, engineering plastics molding and processing equipment, advanced flexible manufacturing system (FMS), electromechanical integration teaching and training system (MTS) and advanced electronic manufacturing technology training system (PCB/SMT) as well as coordinate measuring machines and so on. More than 200 computers and some multimedia classrooms supplied for the ETC, which built up abundant Web-based instruction resources and network management system.

There are 45 full-time staffs in ETC including a full-time professor and 8 above title in sub-senior and 4 part-time professors. Liang Yan-de, the director of ETC, won the sixth national teaching masters award and became the third teacher who won this honor in the engineering training teaching field. In recent years, ETC has imported 7 masters and 3 doctors to improve theory and experiment teaching team. At present, title in senior profession technology and intermediate technology takes up 20 % and 24.4 % of teaching staff respectively while staff with bachelor degree or above takes up 55.3%. In addition, there are 3 teachers are studying part-time for a PHD. The teaching team won the “excellent teaching team in Liaoning province in 2010” title.

The ETC of DUT pay special attention to the innovation practice activity of student. It not only offers a series of systematic innovation practice education courses and establishes a fairly complete policies and institutions, but also set up student mechanical innovation practice base, which owns an opening mechanical innovation studio covering an area of 310 square meters. The ETC provides an excellent education environment used in starting extracurricular technology innovation practice activity, and applied many patents and a series of competition productions.

The ETC continues to enhance self-construction and undertakes some social responsibility at the same time. Nowadays, it has become the centre of engineering practical education and technology training in surrounding region. It accepts some colleges’ engineering training teaching and mechanical basic courses and experimental teaching in local, undertaking the engineering technical training and continuing education facing to society and native government. The ETC is the President Unit of engineering teaching and engineering training seminar of the university in northeast region, Chinese Mechanical Engineer Certification Centre Dalian Training Base, the Training Bases of Higher Vocational and Higher Academic Education of Liaoning province education department and so on.

The construction of ETC is the need to deepen the higher education reform and an important measure of cultivating innovative talents. The whole teachers and students in ETC will endeavor to construct high level engineering training practical teaching demonstration base.
